Joey's Monday Musings Skiibii’s ‘Death’ Shows Grave Lack Of Creativity I Five Star Music

Think about the record label Five Star Music, and all that comes to your mind is Kcee and his group of loud-mouthed, vulgar-wealth-displaying, group of people. Not the music, but the musicians and their ways. Click continue below to read more

As a music label which prides itself with being one of the biggest Nigerian music houses, it’s a shame to have so many disruptive things take attention away from the music.
But that in itself is a function of a lack of a key strategist in the label. 5 Star Music lacks a strategist, who combines A&R with media management and artistic growth.

Kcee, her flagship act is more known for his distasteful dressing than for his musical ability. His inability to get a stylist who can marry his weird, individualistic, Eastern colourful tastes to trendy, impressive outfits is still a problem. One very creative commenter once said “Kcee dresses like the traffic light”.

Kcee is yet to have a hit song after the success of his 2013 single with Wizkid‘Pull over’. His other forays into music have been a personal show of wealth. Nothing more. He never stretches his artistic ability nor leaves his comfort zone. In many ways, he has not grown, hence he toils in vain, musically.
Harrysong, the other act in the label is a true artiste. Insanely talented and extremely hardworking, the singer remains an oracle of Nigerian music, with countless song-writing credits on myriads of Nigerian and extensively, African projects.

But…there’s just as much talent can do. Even if he has found financial comfort with E-Money bankrolling his work, there’s a certain feeling that the artiste has plateaued after the success of his ‘Beta pikin’ in 2013. His next success was digital, as MTN found a way to milk Nelson Mandela’s death for profit.
Harrysong has a new single now, ‘Reggae blues’, and Nigeria if currently feeling it. He has an album planned for next month, but there are still question marks about the promotion of it. Truly said, there has been no promotion for the album.

Enter Skiibii, the dead man. Like my colleague Ayomide Tayo has opined in his beautiful piece, Skiibii killed himself with the PR stunt. Death is too pricey a stunt to pull off in Nigeria media. And it further shows the dearth of creativity in the label. Any low-thinking media executive will never consider that as creatively getting attention. It is career suicide.
The powers that be at Five Star Music have switched into damage control, with a story about a collapse, and an immediate recovery. But that’s not what Nigeria is buying. We aren’t your customers anymore.
The fact of the case is clear; Skiibii released a new single, began to promote the material, conveniently died, got Nigeria’s attention, and on the third hour, he rose again from the dead.
Great biblical stuff Skiibii! Great!
This episodes crowns what has been a number of mistakes, and improper coordination from Five Star Music. Creativity in the media is expensive, but it can be gotten at a fair price. Five Star Music failed to pay for that, hence they are paying for their show of shame.
So what’s next? Perhaps Kcee in a plane crash? Or a bomb scare at the label Headquarters? Or poorly orchestrated episode where Harrysong gets bitten by a rare mosquito which makes his vocal chord freeze from a rare venom?
These sound foolish I know, but with Five Star Music, anything is possible.
